| Otoplasty
Otoplasty refers to recreation of normal ear anatomy in cases of congenital/familial deformity of the ear. Otoplasty does not generally refer to re-creation of the ear in the case of severe deformity of the ear or absence ear (microtia).
The goal of otoplasty is to achieve a natural, aesthetically pleasing ear contour. The results after cartilage reshaping should be permanent. For more on otoplasty, see Dr. Most's lecture on the topic here.

The Procedure
The procedure can be done awake or asleep. Dr. Most recommends that for patient comfort and safety, this procedure be done asleep. Incisions are placed behind the ear.
Patients may expect a few days of swelling in the ears . Some patients recover more rapidly, some may take a few days longer. To protect the ears, Dr. Most will have his patients wear a protective dressing for the first week or so after surgery.
